Roof moss?

Moss growth on roofs has reached unprecedented levels in many parts of the country today. It creates a dull and dirty appearance which can reduce the value of your home.

Roofing materials like tiles, slates, fibre, cement and asbestos all become dull and weakened by moss growth. Even the thinnest layer of moss is a problem because it acts like a sponge, absorbing water, which increases the weight and stress on the roof, shortening its productive life. Frost damage is another problem - by pushing the tiles up and cracking them.

Much of today’s unprecedented spread of roof moss can be traced to the Clean Air act which reduced the output of sulphur (poisonous to moss) into the atmosphere via coal or fossil burning power stations, or domestic fires or unleaded fuel. Moss which would have been previously killed off by this sulphur in the atmosphere requires direct action to prevent its spread.

Roof cleaning measures such as power washing or brushing techniques can remove or roughen the surface of the roofing material, reducing the intended productive life of the roof. At best, messy and dangerous, temporary solutions which require repeated application. They also spread the moss spores rather than kill them.

Copper Ridge is the natural solution to roof moss, algae and lichen. A unique patented product - it consists of a unique inverted “v” shaped strip of 99.9% pure copper which is fitted in two metre lengths along the roof edge by stainless steel fittings.

Exposure to air and water causes the copper to oxidize, creating a fungicide called Copper Sulphate/copper ions - a highly effective moss killer. The effect is obvious under overflow pipes and lead flashing under chimneys.
